Savithriram said that she is happy that her concept is now being promoted in 6,677 libraries across the state. After completing the book, children have to write a summary on the book they had read, and give it to their mother, and the library head. As per the circular from the panchayat raj department, the children must read the book along with their parents, after borrowing it from the local panchayat library. This will not only develop a taste for reading among schoolchildren, but also increase their bond with their mother,” Savithriram said. In order to make reading interesting, a concept wherein a borrowed book is read by a child to their mother, or vice-versa, in case a child is unable to read it, was introduced. Some would stay back in the library for some time, after their classes, to read. Slowly, students started to come and borrow books to read at home. Therefore, I went to 10 schools within the panchayat limits, and gave talks on developing the reading habit. “I was transferred to Mandekolu village panchayat library a few months ago, and learned that the facility was not used by any students. The campaign started on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, and will be held till October 12. One of the top government officials from the department of panchayat raj, came across the concept, after which the department directed all village panchayat libraries in the state, to launch a similar campaign. She started the ‘Ammanigondu Pustaka’ concept to pique interest among the younger generation to read books. This is thanks to Savithriram Kanemaradka, the librarian at Mandekolou village panchayat. MANGALURU: ‘Ammanigondu Pustaka’, an initiative started by a librarian in a remote village panchayat, has now become a state-wide campaign.
